Where does the expression shabby | shabby come from?

Woher kommt der Austruck schäbig

In short: Schäbig comes from schäbenhaltig - that is, from hemp hurds.

But let's start from the beginning. Due to their moisture-regulating properties, hemp textiles were already the "functional clothing" of the Romans and Egyptians. To produce the yarn for the fabrics, the hemp straw had to be mechanically broken down into its components. In the process, it was separated into the hemp fiber and the woody components of the plant - the so-called hemp shives.

If there were still small shives in the yarn, they scratched the skin. The inferior textiles were shabby - that is, shabby.

This expression has remained in everyday usage to this day. And seems to have found its way into English as well.

HANF acoustic panels: shives an important component

Our HANF acoustic panels also contain hemp. Here, the woody parts of the hemp are responsible for the strength of the panel. Without the hemp hurds, only a very soft mat could be produced. In a sophisticated and patented process, the HANF acoustic panel is manufactured in Lower Austria from the whole hemp straw - including the shives.
